Studies show that being part of a team is extremely beneficial for adolescents. When most parents hear the word “team”, they immediately think team sports. While being a part of a sports team can be an amazing experience for many teenagers, the truth is that sports may not be a great fit for everyone. For example, if your daughter doesn’t enjoy sports or feels that she is not as skilled as the rest of the team, then being involved in sports may even have a negative effect on the her confidence level.
The good news is that there are many other ways for your daughter to be a part of a “team” outside of traditional team sports. One incredible example of this is a program called Odyssey of the Mind (OotM). This international educational program allows adolescents (age Kindergarten through college) to work together as teams to creatively solve problems, including many STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) related objectives. These teams receive the opportunity to present their work at local, state, and international competitions.
